Measure the Pulls
The first thing you should do is establish the measurements for the hardware you will install. You need to find out the length and width of the pull. You also have to measure the projection; this refers to how far the handle will stick out from the drawer or door. The larger the projection, the more room you have for your hand or fingers.
From Scratch
If you have to start from scratch, this means your cabinet has no pulls or handles. People recommend using a pull no more than one-third of the height and width of the drawer. This prevents the handle or pull from looking lopsided and out of place. Start by measuring the length of the drawer and complete your measurements from there. Find the location of the mid-point to make sure everything is even and level.
Replacing Hardware
Replacing the hardware of a kitchen cabinet is much easier than measuring from scratch. If the new pull handle has the same dimensions as the previous hardware, you can simply take the old one out and put in the new one. Even if you don’t like the style of the handles on your cabinets, try to replace them with something similar.
